I wrote this song last week. Times have a been a bit tough around us recently; some family who are not well, some challenging and busy moments in our jobs, a number of late night/ early morning phone calls to elderly parents whose health is a concern to us ... you get the idea.
In the midst of feeling like I really needed to worship I played my favourite guitar in the world, my acoustic of more than 30 years. I had left it in CGCGCe tuning for a different song I had been working on. When I realised my evening wasn't going quite as planned, I decided to keep working on the little ditty I had been playing before dinner.
It quickly developed into what you hear. The title came easily this time, "Joy Unquenchable", then "Buoyant Joy" and finally "Joy Unsinkable". The song meanders from major chords into somewhat unexpected minor chords, but the central little happy (major key) riff keeps coming back after the minor chord. For those who don't speak "music theory" this says to me, "Weeping may stay for the night, but joy comes in the morning" - which is an idea from a really old song (Psalm 30). I hope you feel the hope rise in you as you listen.
